Professor Chen Ning Yang won the Onsager Prize
         -------------------------------------
for his contributions to statistical mechanics
                --------------------------------

Professor Chen Ning Yang has won the 1999 Onsager Prize which will be
presented to Professor Yang at the APS Centennial Celebration in
Atlanta next March.

The citation of the Onsager Prize reads:

For his fundamental and seminal contributions to statistical
mechanics and the theory of quantum fluids, including the
circle theorem, the elaboration of off-diagonal long-range
order and flux quantization, the theory of Bose-Einstein
condensation, and exact calculations of thermodynamic
properties of one- and two-dimensional statistical mechanical
        models.

Professor Chen Ning Yang's contributions to physics are both profound
in their depths and far-reaching in their widths. His work with
Professor T. D. Lee on the non-conservation of parity in weak
interactions leaves a permanent imprint on the symmetry principles in
modern physics.  His formulation with Robert Mills on the theory of
non-Abelian gauge theories lays the foundation for the unification of all
interactions.  His work on statistical mechanics and the theory of
quantum fluid, as pointed out by the citation above, are also of profound
and lasting influence.

OCPA and its members would like to send our heartiest congratulations
to Professor Yang for receiving this great honor in statistical
mechanics, which has been long overdue.  We all wish Professor Yang
good health and excellent spirit for years to come!
